It’s 4pm. I thought it must be 3 but no it’s later than I thought. I’ve been gardening since after 1. How blissful to loose time in the garden on a winters day. I love how time can melt when you are gardening. There is still a hint of warmth in the air. Usually by 4pm the evening chill is starting to make its presence felt. The first of the daffodils are starting to flower, as too are the crocuses. The clematis by the backdoor is starting to show leaf buds and when I have been standing waiting for pup to come indoors I notice blossom is appearing. All signs of seasonal change and I am holding on to them dearly. I am ready for winter to pass. I have done my hibernating for the year.
Whilst hibernating I have been thinking about the garden and what I want to do with it this year. My theme is sitting amongst flowers. I have three spaces where we either have existing seating or we have space to add some. I want when you sit in each space to feel like you are surrounded by the garden, with each having a different mood at certain times of day. Space one will be around the main table we have in the garden. It has no shade and is a space where one pots plants, eats a meal or WFH if you wish to be the envy of your zoom meeting. Here I want to plant a border or surround of wildflowers. The second space is in the orchard and it is where I have been collecting plants in pots over the Autumn and Winter. It has ended up giving some nice shape to this space so once I have planted out my pots I will set about creating a bed based on this idea. The final space is the big one and the one I spent a few hours working on today. Space three the garden with a path that feels like you are walking in the sea.
I spied a photos shared on Instagram of a path built up so it looked like you were walking through a sea of flowers and I thought this is what I want. I hope to create something similar around the space where the green house (where the chair is in the photos) was and then collapsed. I feel is a wonderful spot to sit and look across the garden so my plan is to make a path to and from this seating spot where you walk through the garden. It will mean that one large bed will be divided into three triangle shaped beds. I had planned to draw a design but…..
So progress is being made. A little nibble each day and hopefully by next week the space is cleared, weeded and covered in pea straw ready for me to put the foundations in for this little dream into reality. I look forward to sharing with you how it evolves.
